Guess who’s retiring? Yep, that would be me…….on November 3rd. What a hard decision this was, I feel as tho I am leaving my family! The decision has been lurking for some time and I decided now that the Walks were behind us, I would venture off to Retirement Land and see what adventures lie waiting. Working for The ALS Association Evergreen Chapter has had many blessings and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity of working with each of you. I have many memories of the past (almost) five years of all our events and the hard work that each of you have given the Chapter. You certainly made my job easier! I know each of us at the Chapter recognizes that without your hard work, we would not have been able to do what we have in order to raise money to provide for our patients and their families. Believe it or not, I am finding it difficult to find the words to say “goodbye”…….except, Thank you, it’s been an honor to have worked side by side with you. I shall miss you.

What a dear this Volunteer is!! She's a long time Volunteer for our Chapter that has never turned down a request, has stepped up when we called out for help and works tirelessly to do whatever is necessary, and ALWAYS with that great smile. You're awesome Amanda!! Thank you!
Amanda's Words.....
"We all have different reasons and of varying magnitudes of why we have joined the fight against ALS. Some of us are recent supporters of the cause and others have been fighting the disease for years. I volunteer and help spread the word about ALS because of my uncle, Lap Quach.
I am currently a junior at the University of Washington, studying biology and chemistry. Our family received the news of my uncle’s diagnosis when I was 15. Up until that point, I had never experienced a family death, and the news was scary, unexpected and terribly devastating. From that point on, my entire family became very active in the Evergreen Chapter. Although I am an only child, my cousins and I always show up the yearly auctions and walks together. I am so thankful for the organization because not only did it bring my family together, but it encourages our community to come together to help end ALS. It is hard to keep track of the number of times that I have been taken aback at an ALS event. I will never forget volunteering at my first Seattle walk. One of my cousins and I were going from group to group handing out stickers before the event. We were passing out stickers to a group of strangers, when one of them looked up and read my nametag. She goes, “Oh, you’re Lap’s family! We work with your uncle. We’re from Virginia Mason.” For some reason, that moment took my breath away and will stay with me forever. To see this group of strangers come together and support my uncle and others that have been affected by the disease meant the world to me. And to this day, there is no escaping the emotions I feel when hearing the beginning speech before the start of the walk in Seward Park or seeing all of the teams sporting the name of someone they love. Volunteering has really opened my eyes to how many lives ALS has affected.
When I got to college, life became so busy, that I could only think of my family and uncle when I went to bed at night. I’ll never forget where I was on campus when my mom called me with the news of his passing away. The emptiness and sorrow is hard to phrase in words. However, to my surprise, several women from my sorority and friends that I have met throughout college have had loved ones diagnosed with ALS also. The support and love that we share as a community is priceless, timeless and so powerful. I encourage every person to have faith and keep contributing what you can towards our mission of one day eliminating ALS from future generations. Thank you, Candi, for getting me involved with the Evergreen Chapter and thank you to all of the supporters for your dedication!"

Did you know that some of you work for Companies that will match the volunteer hours you have given us v with a check donation? Many of your companies encourage Community Involvement and will match hour for hour with a cash donation. How exciting is THAT? Countless of you have put in so many hours helping The ALS Association Evergreen Chapter, and if your Company would match all that generous time with an additional generous check, think of the double donation you alone would have made happen. So, please check with your company!! It’s an easy process, a piece of paper that will help make a difference. If you need a letter from us verifying your volunteer hours, we can do that!
Evergreen Chapter is the place for your Community Service hours!
The ALS Association Evergreen Chapter has many Volunteer opportunities for students to satisfy their community service commitments in many regional areas of our state. Some of our opportunities are in the office while others are out at our events. You’ll find us to be fun, energetic and passionate about our missions in making each event the best it can be. We love having newcomers join us!! Upon completion, we will provide you with your letter of completion with the hours worked. A win-win for both sides!!
